Allan Duncan has over 40 years experience in the ports, transport and shipping industries and has specialised in port management and cargo handling operations. After a period at sea when he qualified as Master Mariner, he held a number of senior executive positions in a range of major port facilities, including general cargo, RoRo, container and bulk facilities, before forming his own Port Management Consultancy firm in 1997. Since then he has carried out many assignments for governments, consulting engineers and local authorities in a wide range of countries.

These assignments have included port master plans, due diligence, container and bulk terminal operations and equipment requirements, together with providing labour training and industrial relations advice. Some of these projects have included major long term contracts such as identifying the expansion potential for the Port of New York and New Jersey and a programme introducing new operating procedures to JNPT Container Terminal near Mumbai. Short term projects have included terminal layout arrangements, manpower and maintenance requirements in addition to port management training and development.

He has carried out investigations into the airborne dust pollution problems in a number of ports, resulting in the virtual elimination of this problem in these ports, aa well as specialist cargo handling requirements for the remote Islands of St Helena and Ascension.

This wide ranging background has provided him with the experience and the organisational skills required to undertake effective port planning and development, together with wide knowledge of the various operating practices relevant to both major and secondary port management and operations.
