Site Appraisals

Tadri, Kerala, India

The potential development of a coal import terminal together with an iron ore export terminal at Tadri in Kerala State, India, was assessed by an IPC member. This involved a site visit and the preparation of a conceptual scheme for these two facilities. This study examined the engineering and commercial matters affecting its development. It was decided that the project would not be commercially attractive due to heavy cost implications of constructing the required rail connections to the terminals.

Quriyat Container Terminal, Oman

IPC was involved in the preparation of a feasibility study for a major container terminal on the Indian Ocean coast of Oman to provide a strategic alternative for cargoes to the Arabian Gulf. The tasks included identifying a suitable site and developing a conceptual layout for the facilities, including breakwaters and berths with sufficient water to handle larger vessels. In addition, identification and outline of access roads and infrastructure was required to enable the construction of a major modern port.

Gangavaram Port, India

IPC undertook a study to identify the most appropriate location for a bulk import port close to the steelworks at Gangavaram. This included an involvement in identifying the location and the preparation of initial plans for an integrated development to supply feedstock to the SAIL plant close by. Initially the project was to be developed using private sector funding which dictated the necessary construction elements and the phasing of the project.
